Tool for Observing Play Outdoors (TOPO) 2.0

Building on the success of the TOPO tool, this initiative aims to create a 'lite' version of the tool that will make it easier for non-researchers to utilize to assess or design outdoor playspaces

2026-2027

Project Overview

The Tool for Observing Play Outdoors was originally published in 2020, defining a new typology of outdoor playspaces to help better categorize observed play behaviors for the purpose of playspace research and design. The TOPO also outlined an observational behavior mapping framework to utilize to capture and record children's outdoor play behaviors.

The TOPO has since been used by research teams in the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. However, the current protocol can be too onerous to be used effectively by design practitioners or play providers who may want to evaluate existing playspaces. We are therefore planning to develop a simpler 'lite' version of the tool and framework, accompanied by digital tools and templates, that will be better suited to use by non-researchers.

Where and with whom?

Updated, simplified versions of the TOPO and accompanying digital tools will be tested in collaboration with play designers and providers in diverse settings to produce an accessible and reliable toolkit. The tool will be made publicly available through the DECA Lab website.

Expected Outcomes

The process will yield an updated TOPO 2.0 'lite' version suitable for use by non-researchers interested in assessing and improving a diverse range of outdoor playspaces
