Childcare Outdoor Playspace Renovation Study

A pre-post study examining changes in young children's outdoor play behaviors after extensive renovations to outdoor playspaces at 4 low-income childcare centers in San Francisco

2023-2025

What are we trying to do or learn?

This study aims to understand how changes in the physical environment of outdoor playspaces in childcare centers change the play behaviors as well as social and environmental interactions of young children. We are particularly interested in how specific features and conditions of the outdoor environment - especially nature and natural materials - influences the type and diversity of play.

Where and with whom?

Conducted with 4 low-income childcare centers in San Francisco serving children 0-5 years old. Each childcare center had an extensive renovation of their outdoor playspace, including significant incorporation of natural materials and objects, as well as vegetation.

Approach & Methods Used

An intensive observational behavior mapping protocol was conducted at each center for two weeks both before and after the renovations. Staff were also surveyed about their perceptions of outdoor play, risky play and the changes to the playspace. Staff also completed surveys related to child outcomes.
