Beverly J Martin Elementary Co-Design Project
A co-design project with Gr 4 students at an elementary school in Ithaca, NY to re-envision the school playground, the nearby park and the pedestrian crossing between them.
Spring 2024
Project Overview
Cornell students from the DAFE course helped to deliver a co-design program to engage students in reimagining several spaces around their school to better meet the needs and preferences of children.
Where and with whom?
Working with students and teachers in three Gr 4 classes at Beverly J Martin Elementary, 3 groups of DAFE students facilitated 5-6 week co-design programs to 1) envision a re-design of their existing outdoor playspace, 2) assess and re-envision the design of the large park adjacent to the school and 3) design a child-friendly pedestrian crossing between them.
Project Outcomes
Elementary student groups delivered presentation to other students, staff and administrators at the school to share their visions and design priorities. Data from the co-design outputs is also being analyzed and will inform ongoing design engagements at the school and planning with the local school district.
